Biography

1943   Born in Bad Nauheim, Germany.

    1945   End of war.

1949-1962   In addition to normal school subjects, I learn knitting, mending, weaving. I’m surrounded by people who make-do, with their hands and whatever materials are available: my grandfather soles our shoes. I also have art classes, and art history classes, despite a shortage of art materials.

1962-1964   I graduate from the Gymnasium and study English at the University of Saarbrücken (B.A. 1964).

1964-1967   I work as an English and German teacher at the Berlitz School, Frankfurt.

1967   I marry an American and teach German and French at a private school in Mt. Kisco, New York.

1968-1975   We move between Europe, Latin America, Japan and the U.S. In Guatemala City I study Spanish and take a course in still life (I learn to see). I study Japanese and ikebana in Tokyo (I learn composition).

1975   We move to Los Angeles. I work as a cook and companion.

1984   B.A. in French, Magna Cum Laude, CSUN.

1993   I do something I’m afraid of: I "study art." Two 6-week courses at Santa Monica College in collage and assemblage. I realize art is another language. I fall in love with it, work hard, and start exhibiting in 1994.

Artist's Statement

I create collages and assemblages, because they allow me to explore the ambiguities of power, religion and sex, while recycling man-and nature-made leftovers, rediscovering and rearranging the familiar, telling unfinished stories.
But sometimes I create just to enjoy the materials.
